21 days after the death of former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, it was confirmed that he had tested positive for the novel Coronavirus.

The 84-year-old was in the hospital to remove a clot in his brain when it was revealed that he also had a Covid-19. Prior to serving as President between 2012 and 2017, Mr. Mukherjee held several important portfolios during his 51-year political career. These included Finance, Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defense. His son Abhijeet confirmed the news in a tweet.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Mr. Mukherjee's contribution to the country, saying that the former President had "left an indelible mark on the development path of our nation". Mr. Modi wrote on Twitter, "He was praised by a learned man, a politician, politician and all sections of society." Current President Ram Nath Kovind called Mukherjee "a great man in public life" who "served India" with the spirit of a sage.

The president's job is largely formal, but when elections are split, they become decisive. The President decides which party or coalition can be invited to form the government. Mr. Mukherjee was not required to take such a decision as the mandate was clear during his presidency. But she showed her outspokenness in other decisions, such as the mercy petitions of many who were sentenced to death.

Mr. Mukherjee also served on the boards of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Most of his career was with the Congress party, which dominated Indian politics for decades before defeating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) twice in 2014 and 2019.

Mr. Mukherjee joined the party in the 1960s during the tenure of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, whom he called his mentor. In 1986, he left the leadership of the Congress and started his own political party, but returned after two years.

An MP for 37 years, Mr. Mukherjee was widely known as a consensus-builder. Given that successive governments had formed an alliance before 2014, this was an important and important feature. However, Mr. Mukherjee never had a big ambition - to become the Prime Minister of India.

After the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984 and her party's unexpected electoral victory in 2004, she was twice ignored for the post. Manmohan Singh, a trained economist who was elected Prime Minister, later said that Mr. Mukherjee had every reason to feel agitated. "I was better off becoming Prime Minister, but he also knew that I had no choice in the matter," Dr. Singh said that Pranab Mukherjee was one of the smartest politicians in India

By the time Mr. Mukherjee was appointed President of India in 2012, he was accepted as the most experienced politician to hold the post. His term as president prompted him to reject the 18 bills that were sent to him for assent. The President generally does not reject bills sent to him. He rejected 30 mercy petitions of the death penalty - by any Indian president.

As a result, Afzal Guru - convicted for his involvement in the 2001 attack on the Parliament of India, was executed in February 2013. Yakub Memon, who was convicted for financing the 1993 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and Ajmal Kasab, one of the gunmen in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, were also hanged during his tenure.
