Amazon received an important certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday, bringing it closer to starting drone delivery in the United States.

Amazon (AMZN) has now called the Part 135 air carrier certificate, which the company must hold before commencing drone delivery. Amazon said it would use the approval to test the distribution, but declined to say when and where the test would take place.

Amazon said it validated more than 500 security and efficiency processes as part of the application for the certificate. The company has long stated that it plans to use the drone in 30 minutes or less. CEO Jeff Bezos first announced the program in December 2013. Amazon says it has test centers in the United States and around the world today, and has logged thousands of flight hours.

In December 2016, it delivered its first drone delivery in the UK. Its progress has been slow since then. In June 2019, Amazon Worldwide Consumer CEO Jeff Wilke stated that the company planned to deliver by drone within months, but not yet. (Wilke will retire early next year.)

Former Boeing executive David Carbone included Amazon in its drone program last March. He described the certification as an important step. “We will continue to develop and refine our technology, so that delivery drones can be fully integrated into the airspace, and realize our approach to 30-minute delivery by the FAA and others around the world. "Working together."

Carbon said. Social distortion concerns during the epidemic have led to increased interest in using robots for delivery, but the technology is not yet ready for widespread use. The FAA is still developing the necessary regulations for widespread drone use such as remote detection of drones.

Amazon is the third drone delivery company to receive certification from the FAA. UPS and Wing, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, both took over in 2019. UPS distributed the drug to two hospitals in North Carolina. It is distributing leaflets from CVS in The Village, Florida, according to a UPS spokesperson. Wing began drone delivery in Christianburg, Virginia in October 2019.
